Britney gets $15M to join X-Factor
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Britney Spears has reached an agreement to serve as a judge on Simon Cowell's "The X Factor" -- and the payday is really something to sing about.
The "Womanizer" singer will collect $15 million overall for the gig -- approximately $13 million to judge music-industry aspirants alongside Cowell and record executive L.A. Reid, and the rest as a bonus for performing on the show, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The deal has been agreed upon, but has not yet been signed. Spears is still under a conservatorship following her mid-2000s breakdown, with her father, Jamie Spears, serving as her guardian.
Fox had no comment for TheWrap on this story. Spears' manager has not yet returned TheWrap's call for comment. As reported exclusively by TheWrap in March, Spears rejected a $10 million offer to judge on the show, and instead was seeking $20 million for the gig.
Though Spears won't be getting exactly what she was hoping for, the singer's payday does compare favorably to her soon-to-be peers in the music-competition arena: Christina Aguilera is raking in upwards of $10 million to mentor the current second season of NBC's "The Voice." And Spears' "X Factor" predecessor, Paula Abdul received a relatively paltry $2.5 million to judge on the first season.
The individual told TheWrap that, as of Tuesday night, the "X Factor" and Spears camps were still weeks away from a deal, with "X Factor" looking for ways to trim its budget so it could present a more favorable offer for Spears. However, reports Tuesday night that the two sides had already reached a deal spurred the parties to come to an agreement earlier.
Following its first season, which failed by a long shot to perform up to Cowell's predictions, "The X Factor" went into full meltdown mode, firing judges Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, along with host Steve Jones. Cowell has said that the second season will feature two judges, preferably a male and a female
Spears is one of the most commercially successful pop stars of all time, continues to be a top-selling pop star, and that the purported goal of X-Factor (aside of course from the main goal of viewing figures) is to find just such a top-selling pop star - i.e. someone with the draw for audiences that Britney Spears has and continues to have (almost more than any of her rivals).
Being a top-selling pop star has little to do with being a talented singer. Millions of people can sing well. Thousands can sing brilliantly. There are only ever a handful of top-selling pop stars at any one time, so being a talented singer frankly isn't rare enough to make a person one. It isn't actually interesting enough for pop music audiences either.
A lot of talented singers don't make it very far in these talents shows, and if this is a fault of the shows it only mirrors what actually happens in the pop music marketplace. Pop music is heavily trending away from ballads and has moved much closer to dance music (look at the singles chart), with less focus on vocal virtuosity and instead a much more digitized and beat-driven sound. Britney's millions-selling and positively reviewed Blackout album was a successful example of this trend. More generally, some of pop greatest successes have not been about 'the voice' - Madonna, Robbie Williams, Kylie, Rihanna, Pink, today's One Direction - none of these are great singers. Some aren't even good. But they have great appeal to millions of people.
Who can say exactly what they have? The X-Factor is as good a name as any for it, and whatever it is, Britney Spears has proved she has it in spades. She holds a fascination to large numbers of people - more than most other singers with better voices do. She's no flash in the plan:
1) She's in the 13th year of her career in an extremely fickle industry.
2) She was the top-selling female singer worldwide overall since 1998.
3) She's sold more than 190 million records (at a time when selling albums has got harder).
4) Her latest album (her 7th) had 3 top 10 US singles.
5) Her earnings (ultimately because she has so many fans) have always been massive - $64,000,000 in 2010 alone
6) She almost never give interviews or discusses her life but millions of people follow it anyway. Paparazzi photos of her have sold for more than $100,000 each - because people's interest in her was so massive.
7) In 2009 it was estimated that people reading gossip about her online was driving traffic worth $1 billion in online advertising revenue to those websites.
8) That figure sounds crazy - but then her perfumes have grossed more than $2 billion in revenue - making her the most successful celebrity perfume endorser of all time. Did it sell $2 billion because it smells exceptionally good? No - it sold because it had her name on it and that was enough for a lot of people to buy it. Does she have to project an image of impeccable glamorousness to shift so much scent? No - 95% of the time she's photo'd she looking like she's rolled out of bed and thrown on the nearest clothes.
Whatever the X-Factor is, she's got it. And put her on the show and watch the viewing figures jump. And not just because they'll be people hoping she messes up - but because she has great appeal to so many.
Cô ca sỹ Baby Once More Time yêu cầu mức giá lên tới... 20 triệu USD (khoảng 400 tỷ VNĐ) cho bản hợp đồng.
